*****

Gareth had fallen asleep in the B section of the archives, Jack was watching him sleeping, he was sitting on the floor with files scattered around him, boxes pulled out of their place, each one of them in the process of being thoroughly searched.
He looked identical to Ianto, it was scary how much alike they were, he even had Ianto’s dark and wicked sense of humor, working with him in these last few hours he got to know him, and he was every bit as fancyable as Ianto was, Jack had to keep reminding himself, that they were looking for a way to get Ianto back, it was really not a good idea to fall for his double when Ianto was away, however much Gareth reminded him of Ianto.
Ianto had only just completely forgiven him about the incident with the Doctor, and his missing week and a half, he wasn’t quite sure if he had been forgiven about the 1941 trip though! He was going to be a good boy!
But watching Gareth sleeping he wanted to lean over and kiss him, but he knew neither Gareth nor Ianto would thank him for that!
He sighed, and kept on looking through the files and artifacts on the floor next to him, surely somewhere there would be a way to get him back.
The time ticked on, the pile of files and artifacts looked at slowly grew bigger, but still he hadn’t found what he needed.
Jack looked at his watch, 3.17am…
“Bloody hell,”
Jack stood up, his muscles complaining due to lack of use, he stretched and headed up to the hub kitchen, needed his caffeine fix.
Sure he knew how to make coffee, but it was Ianto’s specialty, instead he made some tea. Two cups, incase Gareth wanted some.
He headed back to the archives Gareth was still sleeping the sleep of the exhausted.
Jack looked at the sleeping figure; he decided that he was looking adorably rumpled. His tie was half undone, waistcoat unbuttoned and jacket had been taken off 5hrs before, and his shirt had come un-tucked, if that was Ianto, Jack would have jumped him by now!
He set the cup of tea next to him, but not close enough that it would get knocked over when he woke up.
He picked up some of the files, and started to put them back on the shelves, Ianto was gonna kill him when he got back, the archives were no longer in pristine condition!
*************
Ianto woke up to the sound of the bin men outside; it was just getting light outside, a new day.
Groggily he opened his eyes, everything was just a little too loud.
He looked at the now empty bottle of whisky and realized he had fallen asleep at the computer, which had long since turned off due to power saving, but was still humming quietly to itself.
“Note to self, keyboards do not make a good pillow!”
He stretched and tried to get the kink out of his neck, he glanced at the clock, 7.13am.
Time for a quick shower, new suit and I’ll make it to the hub, before the others get in.
In all his hungover haste he had forgotten that he was in the wrong dimension.
His head pounding against his scull, he dressed in a suit from the closet, he dashed in to work.
Arriving at the Information Kiosk, he found a metal grate covering the door, panicking, he tried to reach the intercom buzzer but couldn’t reach it, getting out his pen, he prodded it through the bars.
“Jack?”
Nothing, it didn’t sound like it was even connected. Something was wrong.
“Dammit!” he shouted at the door, and rattled the bars in frustration, then kicked it.
“Jack!”
He heard giggling from above, he looked up, three girls were staring and whispering to each other and giggling. One of them plucked up their courage to speak.
“Is Jack not in today?”
Ianto frowned, turned and ran along the boardwalk, round the corner, under the bridge and out on to the plass, toward the water tower and lift.
Nearing the water tower, he slowed and approached at a normal pace, luckily the plass was still quite quiet; he looked around and stepped on to the correct stone, and got out his phone,
He looked back toward the bay, the three girls were slowly approaching, it was a good job the perception filter was here!
Standing on the lift he was invisible, he pressed the speed dial for Jack,
“Hello?”
“Jack, I can’t get into the hub! It’s all boarded up, I’ve got the mother of all hangovers and it’s not funny anymore. I’m at the lift, let me in would you?”
“Umm what?” a rather sleepy sounding voice replied.
“Jack, it’s not funny, let me in! I’m being followed by three schoolgirls!”
He heard laughter down at the other end of the phone, “Schoolgirls eh? Just give ‘em an autograph and a photo, and send ‘em away happy!”
The line went dead…
“JACK!”
The three girls were coming nearer. Shuffling closer, nudging one another to approach and they were still giggling.
How could they see him, he should be invisible cos of the perception filter,
Then the memories of yesterday came crashing back to him.
He was in the wrong reality, he felt a little bit stupid standing on the stone. He smiled tentatively at the girls, “Hi?”
More giggling.
“Hi Gareth, pleasecanwehaveaphotowithyou?” the first girl babbled out the question all in one breath and waved a phone about.
He posed with the three excitable teens.
Then came the question, “So in series two, is there going to be any more Jack and Ianto action?”
This caught Ianto completely off guard, “Um, what?” then he smirked, and replied, “Well, you’ll just have to wait and see?” he wiggled his eyebrows suggestively, “Anyway, gotta go cant keep Jack waiting can I?”
With this the girls started to giggle again, and wonder off, presumably to school,
Ianto breathed a sigh of relief, he thought his first meeting with the “fangirls” went quite well, now if he could avoid all other encounters for the foreseeable future he would be doing well!
He walked back to his car, and drove to the BBC.
************
Gareth woke to the sound of a crash and some choice swearwords, and then deadly silence. He opened his eyes not sure what to expect.
He got up and accidentally knocked over a mug of cold tea that was sitting next to him.
“Oh Bollocks!” picking it up, and seeing that the tea wasn’t going to damage anything in the short term, he ran round the corner to the next section of the archives in the direction where the noise had come from.
He arrived to find Jack sprawled not moving on the archive floor and the whole of the G section had deposited themselves and their meticulously archived goods on top of him.
He went over to him, pulling a few of the shelves and random objects out of the way, he finally got to Jack. His neck was at a weird angle and eyes stared unfocused into infinity.
Feeling for a pulse, Gareth’s heart sank. Dead.
Kneeling down next to him, he closed Jacks eyes. And not knowing what else to do, he just sat next to him and waited. Out of curiosity he got out the stopwatch and started to time how long it took for him to come back. Mentally adding on 30 seconds from when he woke up to finding him.
He’d never seen someone dead before, all the times John had acted this out; it still wasn’t the same as actually happening for real. It was creepy.
With one hand stroking Jack’s hair, and the other holding the stopwatch. The stopwatch actually kept him focused, kept his mind away from death.
Watching the seconds and minutes tick slowly by, he was startled by Jacks gasp and his body jerking suddenly as the life flowed back to him.
Then calmly he said. “4 minutes and 47 seconds,”
“Ianto?”
“Sorry, Jack its still Gareth, I was just curious how long it took you to come back.”
“Oh, for a moment there I thought you were Ianto, that’s something he does too, he says it keeps his mind occupied when he’s waiting. Don’t know what his obsession is with my stopwatch though. There’s more of you in him than I originally thought!”
”Um thanks, I think, it’s the button on the top!” Gareth smirked at Jack. “What were you doing anyway for the whole of G section to come down on top of you?”
”Um thanks, I think, it’s the button on the top!” Gareth smirked at Jack. “What were you doing anyway for the whole of G section to come down on top of you?”
Jack for his part looked a little sheepish, “Um…” he trailed off and looked up at where the shelves had been.
Gareth followed his gaze, “You were climbing up them weren’t you? The step ladder is just over there,” Gareth pointed down the corridor, to where the ladders were leaning innocently against the wall
Jack glanced up at Gareth and then down at his hands, and started fidgeting, “I, well, I, um…” He trailed off. “Ianto’s gonna kill me isn’t he”
Gareth looked round at the mess the archives had become, and nodded.
“Only if we don’t clear it up, and if we ever find that device! If there is one!”
At that point the hub alarm sounded.
Immediately Jack regained his Captain authority and none of the ‘boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar’ remained.
“Follow me, Call the team, get them here immediately,”
“Yes sir,” Gareth replied automatically springing into Ianto mode, it was strange how easily that happened. He grabbed his jacket on the way back up to the main part of the hub, and putting his bluetooth headset on he started calling the team.
Jack was looking at the computer that was set up with the rift-monitoring program when Tosh entered the hub,
“What’s the alarm for?”
Jack looked up, “That was quick? How’d you get here so fast?”
Tosh looked puzzled,
Gareth, coughed, “Actually, I was about to call her, Gwen is on her way, Owen I couldn’t reach.”
“Tosh, slight emergency...” Jack pointed at the computer, and moved away, so she could sit.
She nodded and sat down at her computer, “Worked out what is causing it?”
“Not yet, the alarm has just this minute gone off.”
“Right,” she clicked a few buttons, “Something has just popped up, I’m getting abnormal readings, could be a creature, not sure though. Anyway it must be big, as it managed to set the rift alarms off. Head towards Splott, Just finding the exact location for you now, I’ll send it through to the SUV’s GPS system.”
“Tosh, Good work, keep tracking it, and send Gwen the location too, tell her to meet us there,”
Jack was striding to the exit “Ok Ianto, with me.”
Gareth followed him out. “Sir?”
Jack looked back at him as he was getting his coat, and realized that he wasn’t Ianto.
“Ah, right, um, you got a gun?”
Gareth nodded, “Well let’s hope these are friendly aliens, we’re a little short staffed, keep trying to reach Owen, you had any field training?”
“A little, but not really, it’s acting!”
“Ok, just stay behind me, and do what ever I tell you, if I say run, run, you ok with taking commands?”
”Yes sir,”
”Yes sir,”

Date: 2008-03-27 01:59 am (UTC)One thing though, movie "police" work and actually running around with a gun like real law enforcement do are completely different. XD For instance, in the movies and such actors always slide with their backs against the wall and their guns pointed up when they're looking for the bad guy, and peak over the corner of the wall to see if the coast is clear. What they actually do in RL is go wide so they can see the bad guy without the bad guy seeing them, and they don't risk getting their head blown off (if that makes sense, I'm being lazy and not explaining all that well XD). And you point your gun down so that if you trip or accidentally pull the trigger, you risk shooting your foot instead of your head. XD Gareth would be SOOOO screwed if he was relying solely on his experiences as an actor. LOL
Still, LOVE this story! More, yeah? :D
